Ocean’s Eight

9 Out of 10.0

I haven’t seen any of the more recent ones but I was a huge fan of the first. Ocean’s Eleven (the one with Frank, Sammy, Dean, etc) was true Hollywood at its best. Ocean’s Eight was a similar story. A big heist at its best. I’m guilty of not knowing all of the superstars involved but maybe that’s what made it even better.
Ocean’s Eight was a really good movie. Kept you on your toes until the end!

Growing up I was always a huge Mr. Rodger’s fan. This movie jus showed me why. The story of how and why he did all of the great things he did was all put together in one place. The puppets, the characters, the behind the scenes stuff was a wrapped in one neat bow (tie!)
Fred Rodgers had a huge place in my life. See this movie and if he didn’t already have a huge place in yours, he will! He can live next to me anytime he wants!

Incredibles II

7.0 Out of 10

The first one was just OK, this one is better. Plot was a little hard to follow (especially in a movie made for little kids.) The story was simple but twisted Incredibles II was well animated and put together but,it seemed a little too much like a commercial for stuffed animals.
The best part of this movie was the short at the beginning. About a woman and her imaginary child. It may be a little too advanced for the young ones but I really enjoyed it. For me it was the best part of the film.

Action Point

4 Out of 10.0

I wanted it to be good.  Action Park was where I hung out when I was a kid.  Not that I thought this was going to be a documentary but, I thought there was going to be a story.  The makeup looked like it was leftover from Bad Grandpa.  The actors looked like the cheapest they could get. It could have been so good. Retelling the story of one of the craziest amusement parks in the history of the world. Johnny Knoxville is played out.
For a movie that I wanted to be good, Action Point was not!

Deadpool 2

I wanted it to be so much more.  The first one really hit me by surprise.  I was new to the whole move thing at that point and had no idea what to expect. This one I had high hopes for and it really didn’t live up to them.  Too much going on.  Too cute for itself but, Deadpool 2 just wasn’t the movie it had the potential to be.
Maybe I’m just “superheroed” out.  Too many lately.  The Avengers.  Black Panther.  Superman.  Spiderman.  Etc.  I just can’t keep up!  Maybe we all do?  It just felt like it was too much too soon.  Maybe it’s time for us all to just get back to realiy.  (Even if only for just a little while!)

I went in having seen all (or most) of the other Avenger movies before this one.  Even watched Superman last night.  There was way too much CGI and not enough of the actors.  The story was pretty straightforward.  A bad guy wants to take over the world and they want to stop him.  There was a lot of back story going on.  He hates this one.  Those two are a couple.  Just too much for me to keep track of.
I can’t say I didn’t like it but it wasn’t made for someone who wasn’t an Avengers pro.  when it’s released with a director’s track to explain it all to me, I’m sure I will enjoy it much more.  **MOVIEPASS HAS CHANGED THEIR TERMS.  YOU ARE NOW ALLOWED TO SEE EACH MOVIE ONLY ONCE!**  Not sure if this is the finale or if there will be any more.  This didn’t really wap it all up.  There are still a lot of unanswered questions.  It was better then good just not as great as it could have been.

I Feel Pretty

5 Out of 10

If you saw Shallow Hall you saw I Feel Pretty. Same premise. An unattractive person has something happen to them that changes their self-perception. Amy Schumer falls off her bike while exercising at Soulcycle (ton of product placement) and wakes up and sees herself as a beautiful model. She also thinks that’s the way everyone else sees her. Now she has self confidence and a great job to go along with her perceived good looks. Fast forward and she knocks her head again and everything is gone. She’s back to the way she always was.
Maybe there’s supposed to be a hidden lessen that we’re all beautiful on the inside but we just don’t see it. The movie was watchable and had some funny parts but wasn’t anything so special for me.

I saw the first one and consider myself a fan. This one wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be. You’ve heard of “jumping the shark?” These movies are in the water swimming with the shark! They’re stupid. They’re pointless. The stories don’t even make sense but they’re also not a bad way to spend an afternoon!
At least they know who they are and don’t try to pretend to be something they’re not. Sorry I can’t get wasted, eat an entire bucket of popcorn (which I did anyway), turn off my brain and crack up with all of the other stoners in the theater! To all the Supertrooper fans of the world, unite, blaze one for me and enjoy!

It’s The Rock.  Again!  In a movie with a preview for his next.  Has Hollywood run out of leading men?  When’s the last time you met a guy who was fluent in sign language with gorillas, was a decorated war hero, knew how to fly helicopters and managed to have a body like The Rock?!  When I get a splinter, it’s hurts like hell.  He gets shot and just “walks it off!”
It was entertaining, the story was ok and the movie wasn’t too long.  I smell what The Rock is cooking.  What he’s cooking here is a movie that was just ok.  That’s for me, a 50 year old man.  Maybe if I was a 13 year old boy, it’s the next Indiana Jones!

Isle of Dogs

It was the first double feature I’d done in a while. It was late. I was tired and not expecting much. Boy was I wrong. This movie was great. The voice credits started rolling and I couldn’t believe the big names. The movie wasn’t as much of a cartoon more like anime. The story was simple. A boy gets separated from his dog. The way it was handled is what blew me away. Forget the animation part, here’s where the writing kicks in.
Boy gets a dog from his nice father (a politician). Dogs are outlawed so they have no choice but to get rid of the dog. (Here’s where the symbolism starts kicking in.) The boy goes on a mission to rescue his dog. At first it seems simple. He finds an empty cage filled with dog bones. His dog must be dead. But then he meets up with some other dogs who have managed to survive. It’s a pack made of four dogs (plus one who is a rebel) who have managed to survive and they know the truth: the dead dog isn’t his. Here’s where the fun starts. It’s time to go find his dog. Led by the pack and the rebel, the boy’s after the truth of what really happened and why he was duped. He has communication with two groups, his father and a girl trying to help him save his life and all dogs.
The pack helps him discover his dog is still alive and there’s been a cure discovered to cure all of the sick dogs.  The dogs are saved.  The president is killed and the little boy is reunited with his dog.  A really good, thought provoking movie.
And just check out the list of the stars!!

Not a great movie but kind of cute. Maybe I see it a little differently as the father of two girls? Three childhood friends decide to make a pact to lose their virginity on prom night. Their parents discover the plan and try to stop it. You figure out the rest. Not too hard but not a terrible movie.

To say I made it past the first 10 minutes of this movie just wouldn’t be fair.  I’m not sure if it was the fact that i had just come from the dentist or if it had anything to do with my medication but this movie put me right to sleep!  The few minutes that I saw were entertaining but the majority of what I saw of this movie was the inside of my eyelids.  I still need time to decide if I should be apologizing to the people who made this film or if they should be apologizing to me.

7.5 Out of 10

Sometimes’ good not to see the preview.  I picked Gringo just because of the time.  It turned out to be a surprisingly good movie about a guy and his adventures on a trip to Mexico.  He works for his friend who turns out to be a total jerk (for reasons which are never totally explained!)  On his trip to Mexico to check out the companies factory, his boss and his girlfriend deceide to come along.  It turns out their company is a pharmaceutical company which produce a syntheic form of marajuana to cure pain.  As it turns out, the company is in business with a Mexican drug lord who is not ready to stop doing business.  (Why they couldnt all work together is never really explained.)
On his trip to Mexico, the main charachter finds out that his boss (his best friend since they were kids) is planning to fire him, having an affair with his wife, having an affair with the other owner of the company, ready to fire him and also ready to sell the company.  Let’s just say there’s alot going on!
It all wrapsup to be an entertaining movie.  Not great acting, not great casting.  A totally unbelievable story, but entertaing nonethless.

Welcome to New York (Sub-Titles)

I guess I need to start watching preview or reading the reviews before I go and see these foreign movies.  What I thought was going to be my first Bollywood movie wasn’t!  I wish I could tell you what it was even about.  There were so many different plots going on that I couldn’t even keep track.  One girl worked in a talent agency that was going to put on a show in New York.  Because she couldn’t get a promotion, she was going to sink the contest by entering the worst contestants.  There was also a sub-plot going on where the worst contestants met and fell in love / hate on the plane ride over from India.  The judge was supposed a famous Indian soccer star who hired an identical twin to travel for him so he didn’t have to deal with the paparazzi or any fans who bothered him.
It turns out the only two winners of this entire nationwide contest were the two main characters (who were forced to share for a reason that was never really explained!)  As the contest draws closer, it turns out there is a plot to kidnap the guy who was the judge.  Who are the ones who foil the kidnapping?  The two people who are the stars of the show!  Confused?  So was I!  There were some singing and dancing numbers but not enough to make it a true Bollywood movie.
None of the plots were never clearly explained.  Did the main character leave to go on and start her own agency?  Who was trying to kidnap the soccer star and why?  Too many unanswered questions in a movie that never really went anywhere.
  • As a side note, it’s interesting to see an outsider’s point of view of New York City.  For example, I was trying to figure out where the big talent show was taking place.  Parts of it looked like they were filmed in Madison Square Garden.  Parts looked like the Izod Arena and parts looked as if they were just filmed on a soundstage made to look like an arena.

Game Night

7 Out of 10

Pretty good movie starring Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams.  Every week the two of them, along with a group of their friends, get together for a game night.  (Yet the rule is no drinking games which I found weird!)  One week Bateman’s brother shows up and decides he wants to play too.  It turns out he is a billionaire who has done everything great his whole life (or so we are led to believe!)  It also turn out that the competition between the two brothers is so bad it is lowering Bateman’s character’s sperm count to the point where he can’t have kids.  The brother brings the game to his big fancy mansion and changes all of the rules.
It is no longer a game night of board games but one where he has hired a company to turn the night into a murder mystery.  Or is it?  The winner of the game that night gets to keep the older brother’s new red Corvette Stingray.  As the actors show up and the game night starts, so does all of the fun.  It turns out that the company hired to run the night has been hijacked by some Russian thugs who are after the brother.  It turns out that the brother isn’t the world-class investor he says but an international con-man and drug dealer.  Now we have to figure out who is who.  Who are the members of the acting troupe and who are the real drug dealers ready to kill everyone?
A Hitchcock thriller it isnt but it is a pretty decent movie…

7.0 Out of 10

I wasn’t really sure what to expect from Early Man.  Was it going to be a kids movie just because it was animated?  I knew it was made by the same people who mae Wallace & Grommit.  A series of shorts and movies that I was familiar existed but didn’t know much more about them.  It turned out to be quite an enjoyable movie aimed towards kids but fitting for adults too.  The story of a kid trying not only to rescue his vilage but his entire way of life at the same time.  And how does he do it?  All by a simple soccer game.  It delt with issues of vanity, sexuality, greed and many other things all while keeping it very simple.  It was there if you wanted to see it and not there if you didn’t.  Overall, a very enjoyable way to spend an afternoon.

A re-make of a Robin Wlliams movie that I never saw.  This one was really good.  An exciting story of 4 high school students who end up in detention, find an old video game and magically enter the land of one of the games.  Who would have ever thought that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Jack Black could have become such huge movie superstars?  Een Kevin Hart starte out as just a stand up comedian.  They all come togetheter (along with some girl I never heard of) to make a very entertaining movie…

I like Matt Damon.  I (usually) like Matt Damon movies.  The preview for this one looked like it was going to be a funny one.  It wasn’t!  It looked like Kristen Wiig and Jason Sudekis were going to have big parts in it.  They didn’t!  What seemed like it was going to be a good idea movie was just bad!…

Here we go again.  It’s the story between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs again.  Maybe it’s because of my age but I felt like this is a story that didn’t really need to be told again.  I’m not a 12 year old girl who wants to see Tina Fey and Steve Carrell (both who did a great job) tell me a story that I already know.  I remember seeing both of the real athletes play themselves on The Odd Couple.  I remember seeing the story on Wide World of Sports and all over the place.  This, for me, was just a story that I didn’t need to hear again.  There were a few interesting tidbits that I didn’t know which I found…

The Lego Ninjago Movie

8.0 Out of 10

This was the first movie that I saw using MoviePass and it was by accident.  I got to the theater and wasn’t sure how to set-up my card.  In the time it took me to activate my account, the movie I wanted to see had already started so I was left with seeing The Lego Ninjago Movie.  It turned out to be quite a pleasant surprise!  I had no idea about the Lego movies and their history and I received quite an education.  They were not only just for kids but also dealt with quite mature themes and ideas and hid them in a juvenile way.  The favorite thing that I remember about this movie was that a cat was the main vilain to the Lego city (and who to be a better enemy to a city made of Legos then a cat) and the secret weapon against the cat was a laster pointer.  Anyone who has ever owned a cat know of their inability to resist the beam of a laser pointer.  They are consumed in following that little dot antwhere it goes…
